Life’s Lessons: Missed Opportunities, New Opportunities & Navigating Negativity

Hello everyone!! I hope everyone is having a great week so far. My week has been full of mixed emotions, and trying to see the best in everything.

One of my Goals for the new year and decade is to start working from home full time. This has been a goal of mine for a very long time, it may even be more of a dream than a goal. It is, however, a dream that I am working hard to try and make come true anyway.

Life's Lessons: Missed Opportunities, New Opportunities & Navigating Negativity

Earlier this week, I was contacted by an old boss of mine asking me if I could get into the office (out of state) for a sit down so we could possibly come up with an agreement. I was ECSTATIC!! Immediately I started planning my trip, writing out my list of things to pack and have ready for our meeting. I was also excited to see some of my old coworkers that I have missed. It seems I may have gotten ahead of myself.

To make a long story short, the trip did not happen. A misunderstanding among business partners. For now, their plan of action is taking them in a different direction. If this solution doesn’t work, they will consider my contract as a possibility. A new opportunity might be presenting itself though.

Every year around this time, Mr. B & Mr. M go to a vendor show in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mr. B kindly asked that I send him some of my business cards so he can pass them out to people he knows who are always looking for good help!! Although I know that nothing may come of this, there is a good possibility that something will. Even though this is not the result I was hoping for, it is still a step forward in reaching my goal. Maybe in the spring I will even attend High Point Market with them to gain some exposure.

Everything Will Work Out The Way It Is Supposed To

This is what a friend of mine told me when I told shared my good news. Although I didn’t end up going on the trip, I think what my friend told me has so much truth to it! Maybe I am not meant to go back to work for my old company, or maybe it’s just not the right time. With all this in mind, I can’t help but tell myself to embrace bigger and better things. New and exciting adventures ahead!! I just have to put in the work to make it happen, even if it is with their help. After all, that is the point of a goal right? To work hard for something you want.

Like many other things in life, sometimes things just don’t quite work out the way we initially want them to. That doesn’t mean it’s the end of the road, though. Keep going! Trust yourself, and trust your journey. Life has honestly taught me this so many times, and it’s nice to be reminded of this.

Don’t Let Other People’s Opinions Discourage You

Just as I received a lot of support with the possibility of a new position, I also received some very negative and discouraging feedback. It was actually quite hurtful.  As we were talking about it, it was as if this person did not support this at all. It was one thing after another. If I had an answer for one thing, another negative comment was made. I didn’t understand it. I think this person was definitely speaking from ignorance, and did not know and or understand the big picture. I completely respect that everyone is entitled to their opinion. However, to be rudely cussing, spewing things out, and not knowing all of the details is just, well… rude. Especially if it doesn’t impact them at all. Oh well.

As much as all of this really bothered me, I tried my hardest to not let it ruin my moments of celebration. Even though my business trip didn’t happen, it is still encouraging that I was thought of! Word of mouth is a very powerful marketing tool. By sending my business cards / flyers with them to Vegas, another opportunity of the same nature might present itself. I expect I won’t get any or much support from this person if/when that time comes along either.

Misguided Negativity

The thought has also crossed my mind that maybe the negativity I encountered wasn’t even about me. (After all, not everything is. #facts) Maybe Mr. Negative Nate is just working through some things of his own, and took it out on me. Which is very realistic. That doesn’t mean it was okay, it just means I was sharing my news with that person at the wrong time. (His name is not Nate – just what I am calling him.)

At the end of the day, my business ventures and goals have zero impact on Mr. Negative Nate. Therefore, his opinion shouldn’t matter to me. Even though it was hurtful to not have support from someone who is important to me, I will NOT change my goals just to appease him. I will keep pushing forward, even if it’s in baby steps, to reach my goals! It is what I want, and what is best for my family.

Lessons Learned in Simple Everyday Life

I am actually happy it all turned out the way it did. Believe it or not, I learned quite a bit. That in itself makes me happy. The things I learned are:

  1. Missed opportunities open the door for NEW opportunities
  2. Everything will work out the way it is supposed to.
  3. Not everyone will be happy for you.
  4. Don’t let other people’s negativity discourage you. Keep going, so long as you’re not hurting anyone.
  5. Not everything is about you, don’t take everything so personally. (Even if it was about me, and I’ll never know, it was still a nice reminder.)

How have you all been doing? What are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned so far this year? I’d love to hear in the comments!!

  1. I applaud your faith and passion! Your thoughts about timing and being patient is also very true!

Regarding negative Nate… I’ve got a couple of negative nate’s in my own life. Like you, I try to keep things in perspective. I don’t have to be a doormat for anybody, but I just pray for those types and then keep on doing my best. There was a time in my life I was a negative nate myself, so there is hope!

Wishing you the best with your goals!
